Job Summary

The Corporate Energy Specialist will lead and support the development, monitoring and implementation of CRD’s corporate energy management initiatives. The Corporate Energy Specialist will be responsible for providing technical expertise, advancing energy and emission plans, and supporting the execution of corporate focused energy and emissions saving initiatives.

Qualifications

  • A post-secondary degree in Engineering, Resources, and Environmental management, applied science, or a related professional field plus a six years of directly related experience.
  • The following training would be an asset:
  • A member or eligible to registration with Engineers and Geoscientist BC as a Professional Engineer OR
  • Accreditation as a Certified Energy Manager designation by the Association of Energy Engineers, OR
  • Sustainable Energy Management Advanced Certificate 
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may also be considered.
  • Must possess a valid BC Driver’s Licence.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities

People working in this role can expect to be responsible for performing the following duties. This list is not meant to be comprehensive and other related duties similar in scope and complexity may be performed.

  • Leads the development and implementation of the corporate Strategic Energy Management Plan (SEMP), including monitoring energy targets, projects and associated strategies.
  • Provides professional and technical expertise, guidance and direction to internal stakeholders in the implementation of the Climate Action strategy.
  • Identifies, promotes and assists in implementing internal projects and programs to improve energy efficiency, cost savings and greenhouse gas reductions.
  • Coordinates efforts with other CRD departments and consultants in integrating the CRD’s Climate Action Strategy and other plans and policies, with a focus on facilities.
  • Leads energy, utilities and emission data monitoring and reporting.
  • Maintains detailed records, tracks usage, and develops appropriate benchmarks and key performance indicators for utility usage.
  • Undertakes technical analysis and provides technical expertise, advice and recommendations to CRD departments to influence and incorporate energy efficiency and greenhouse gas reduction approaches.
  • Prepares memos, proposals, business cases and presentations to internal divisions to secure approval or energy and carbon reduction projects.
  • Identifies opportunities for grants or external funding sources and utilities partnerships to support planning and implementation of CRD Climate Action Strategy and energy management plans.
  • Partners with building operators to support building continuous optimization for designated facilities ensuring that the building systems operate efficiently.
  • Oversees energy audits, feasibility studies and other studies related to the portfolio.
  • Assists departments with evaluating and implementing internal projects to improve energy efficiency, cost savings and greenhouse gas reductions.
  • Supports the development of technical standards and guidelines to enable the integration of energy, carbon emissions and sustainability goals in corporate policies and procedures.
  • Follows all policies, procedures and standards of the CRD. 
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

To be successful at the CRD, candidates should have a shared understanding of our Cultural Traits and Statement of Reconciliation with Indigenous peoples. Additionally, ideal candidates would possess the following role specific knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • Excellent communication (verbal and written), interpersonal and customer service skills are required.
  • Knowledge and understanding of strategies to significantly reduce energy and GHG consumption within medium sized public sector organizations
  • Familiarity and knowledge of energy efficient technologies and energy modelling approaches.
  • Experience completing technical calculations related to energy and emissions, including validation and verification.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with diverse groups of professionals and across multiple disciplines.
  • Experienced in report writing, financial analysis and budgets.
  • Ability to develop compelling business cases and write comprehensive reports.
  • Demonstrated project management skills, including overseeing the work of consultants.
  • Ability to facilitate work of interdepartmental teams; including influencing, seeking and providing advice.
  • Proficiency and experience with word processing (MS Word), spreadsheets (MS Excel) and presentation (MS PowerPoint) software.
